1. BOBBY KODIAC- (18 - 22 yr old MALE) a young, aspiring songwriter/playwright who hails from Alaska, Bobby is an old-fashioned idealist, dreamer, naive to the ways of New York and completely unprepared for the inner strength and focus one needs to pursue one's dreams in the big city. The demise of the studio he works for, a betrayal by a trusted partner and unrequited love force him to question his beliefs and affection for nineteen thirties musicals and look to an odd collection of street friends for answers. Through them he finds the steel to stop questioning his talent and go all in, betting on himself and making believers of those who doubted him along the way.
2. LINDA - (18 - 24 yr old FEMALE) Linda is a young, Julliard dance student and the lead male character's (Bobby) unrequited love interest. Working her way through school as an exotic dancer, Linda is finding that her dream of dancing in the theater is not much closer to being reality in New York than it was in her hometown of Tulsa, Oklahoma. Talented, but a bit disillusioned and with a penchant for picking destructive love relationships with rock musicians, Linda is insecure, looking for validation everywhere but from within.
3. PAUL - (MALE, Late 30's - Early 40's) a jazz drummer, who relates more to the Beat Scene of the nineteen fifties than the technological twenty first century, Paul is the owner of Alternative Media Recording Studios and partners in both business and romance with Susan, the studio manager. The studio is Paul's hedge against betting on his dream of being a great jazz musician. Instead, he plays on occasional jingles and watches those that do go for it all often succeed in making their dreams come true. Unable to commit to a conventional relationship with Susan, partly because his offbeat lifestyle is his only remaining connection to his youth, Paul is spiritual and sincere.
4. SUSAN - (female, Late 30's - Early 40's) Susan is a business-savvy realist. Because her scheme to convince Paul to buy a recording studio did not lead to the marriage, family and success with him that she thought it would, she is jaded when it comes to all things idealistic. Gruff on the outside, Susan is a maternal figure with a soft heart.
5. ROCK - (male, 20 - 25 Yrs Old) a young, studio session singer, Rock is an ambitious narcissist/egomaniac and lead vocalist in the after-hours studio house band, New York Dream. He loves the ladies and is all about doing whatever it takes to get ahead whatever the cost. He is opportunistic and sometimes devious, driven by his dream of being a rock god.
6. LOLLY - (female, 17 - 20 Yrs Old) Lolly is a young, techno nerd, assistant recording engineer, bent on turning the aging Alternative Media Recording facility from a relic of the analogue age into a state of the art digital facility. She is a Goth punk/grunge rocker, with all the requisite piercings. Disgruntled and irritable at all times because no one takes her suggestions for updating the studio seriously, she's abrasive, blunt, and constantly at odds with everyone because they're so old-fashioned and slow to accept change.
7. ANGIE - (female, 60 - 70 Yrs Old FEMALE) a comic figure, Angie is an elderly, eccentric bag lady. Prone to superstition, she is surprisingly erudite, reading every daily newspaper from cover to cover. She is a fixture on 57th Street whom everyone looks after and a fountain of advice and encouragement. She also has an uncanny ability to find virtually anything anyone needs in the paper shopping bags that she carries with her wherever she goes. LAWYER (thirty-five to fifty): This character is like a fish out of water in a recording studio. She is all business. A real estate attorney, the same character that plays ANGIE should read her part.
8. SOL - (male, 60 - 70 Yr Old MALE) Sol is the elderly owner of a 57th Street newsstand on the northwest corner of Eighth Avenue. He is a city historian, an observer of people and a bit of a philosopher whose endearing penchant for using large words makes him often hard to understand (some combination of Dickens' Micawber and Gilligan's Island's Millionaire).
9. DRUMMER - (male, 50 - 55 Yr old) the drummer is an aging, sanguine street musician whose life peaked when he won a Gene Krupa drum contest in 1963 at the age of eighteen. Playing for quarters on 57th street, his beat is the beat of life of the city and when he stops playing and speaks all the actors freeze in their positions onstage. He is the bard and addresses the audience directly. This character will also read for the part of ENGINEER/PRODUCER VOICE, an unseen, godlike character with a soothing deep voice.
10. HOOKER - (female, 20's - 30's) this is a comic role. Hooker has little education beyond the profession she knows well, but she is good-hearted and takes a liking to whomever Sol and Angie approve of. She's a tough Brooklyn girl with a heavy New York accent and a penchant for chewing gum and misunderstanding nearly everything anyone says.
11. NICK - (male, 50's) Nick is the owner of the Blue Flame Greek diner next door to Alternative Media Recording Studios. He is a good-hearted custodian of the neighborhood appetites and arbitrates overheard discussions with a heavy Greek accent.
12. BEBE - (female, 30's - 40's) Bebe owns a small women's boutique on 57th Street. She hates the street people that are fixtures in the neighborhood, blaming them for the downturn in her business. A supercilious, judgmental elitist, she eventually finds help putting her finger on what her customers need and want from the very people she despises.
